Jason shares his personal journey into meditation, which started at a young age through deep listening to music and sound.

Key points:

1. Meditation as a means to quiet the incessant stream of thinking and activate the observer within. There are various techniques to achieve this, such as deep listening, watching thoughts, and breath work. Never let anyone tell you there is only one way (to do anything)

2. “Mindfulness” is the wrong word to use. We don’t need our mind more full, instead a better word would be "awareness." Meditation is to empty the mind rather than fill it with more thoughts.

3. What about the proliferation of online gurus and the popularity of breath work? Jason suggests they might be a good thing! The important thing is to take action and engage in some form of meditation or breath work - it doesn’t matter who got you interested, just that you get started.

4. Breath work has many benefits including its ability to regulate the nervous system, expel cellular waste, and provide energy. We must be deliberate and intentional breath work to experience its full benefits.

5. The integration of breath work into family life is explored and Jason shares playful ways to involve children in breath work, such as incorporating it into daily activities or engaging in breath-holding exercises.

6. What about the relationship between technology and breath work? Technology has obvious benefits, but we need to disconnect from technology and listen to silence, nature, and one's own body to truly experience the benefits of breath work.

7. There is powering in shifting your perspective from linear time to nonlinear time. Focus on the present moment and the eternal "I am" rather than dwelling on the past or future. “It’s always been you, you’ve always been here and it’s always been now”

8. The importance of embracing impermanence and understanding the interconnectedness of birth and death was discussed. There cannot be triumph without tragedy, so to experience one we must experience the other.

9. The meeting concluded with a rapid-fire question round, where the speaker shared insights on leadership, stress relief, and personal growth.

Action Items:

1. Incorporate breath work into their daily lives and explore different techniques.

2. Practice mindfulness and focus on being present in the moment.

3. Disconnect from technology and spend time in nature to enhance their breath work practice.

The Rite of Passage

Everyone has to go through rite of passage that shows up. If life is too good - too easy -there is no reason to change. The difficult things are the things that shape and mold us.

The Gray Wolf1 makes the distinction between the “Earned Path” and the “Entitled Path”. The Master Key to Wisdom makes a distinction between “Pa doe” (the bad path) and “Chung Doe” (the good path).

Andrew Huberman says: “Dopamine without effort will destroy a person”

Walk the earned or the “Chung doe” path, earn your dopamine, however you want to think about it… the first lesson is that the game is going to be hard, and we have to learn how to stay in it because…

If you don’t finish, you can’t win.

Staying In The Game

Our natural, impulsive, human instincts will try knock us out of the game for momentarily relief. It will tell us that we can’t handle what’s in front of us, fill us with uncertainty and trick us into chasing big audacious goals that aren’t aligned with who we are.

Most only need to stay in the game for a year or two to reap the benefits of the investment we’ve made in the future - and they fail because they quit.

Here are some things that will help you stay in the game…

You Can Love Anybody

Jeff’s daughter was ten years old when she was adopted. She didn’t speak any English, they had only three words to communicate … and it was in sign language:

• quiet

• sleep

• hungry

Coming from a third world country where she was abandoned, abused, taught to steal and left to fend for herself on the streets, her psychological state was simple:

“How can I trust anyone?
I’m going to do everything I can to make you not like me.
….And when you turn your back on me I’ll have proof I can’t trust anyone”

She actively made sure that her new parents would NOT be rewarded in the short term for choosing her. What she hadn’t counted on was the lesson Jeff was learning:

Loving someone is a choice, and it’s a one way street.

It’s not something you barter for to get something in return or something you measure to get a fair deal. On the other side of everything we go through, all the hardships, what are we going to say about ourselves?

Are we going to snivel, whine and complain that we didn’t get enough in return or are we going to walk off the field knowing we showed up for the people we love?

Trust The Process

For nearly ten years, the Spencer’s faced the same uphill battle: make it through the day. And then what? Do it again.

There are times we don’t have visibility or an insurance policy against the future. Jeff and his wife has to trust the process, even though there were no guarantees about when the tide might start to turn.

Sometimes the process is to show up and get through the day.

This is where the ability to stay in receptivity and to adapt to situations in realtime is cultivated and developed. The human mindset will try to quit to get some relief or look for tactics, tricks and shortcuts.

All investments in your future mature at different rates, but the only way to realize the benefits is to trust the process - even if the outcome is hard to see.

Answer The Call

Jeff was living the dream.

Olympic medal? Check.

Waitlist of potential clients? Check.

Making money? Check.

Happily married? Check.

Traveling the world with celebrities and pro athletes? Check.

There is nothing wrong with living the dream, it’s just not a calling. Often our dreams are of high aspiration and driven by selfish reasons. There is nothing wrong with pursuing them, but many dreams are not aligned with your calling.

A calling is being receptive to an outcome outside of yourself. It’s not driven by immediate self interest, but instead a sense of purpose that you are uniquely suited for.

Sometimes dreams and callings are disguised as goals.

A SMART goal may be SMART, that doesn’t mean it’s the RIGHT goal for you.

A BHAG (big hairy audacious goal) may be a BHAG… that doesn’t mean it’s the RIGHT goal for you.

Instead of chasing goals, learn how to sit in receptivity and listen for the call.

How You Show Up Matters

The most important question we have to answer every single day is …

…How are you going to show up?

You’re exhausted. Feeling sick. Sad. Frustrated. Given up or lost everything you’ve worked for. Scrutinized by friends and family. Hard time putting food on the table.

It doesn’t matter, because you have to walk off the field knowing you gave everything you have to give.

How you choose to show up every single day matters more than any other decision you’re faced with. Deal with your stuff however you need to deal with yourself, but make the decision to show up for others.

Always hold space for a miracle.

We must hold space for a miracle.

We can’t force it or create it, but must leave space for it and have aspirations outside of our reach that keeps us in the game.

We must hold space for a miracle and help others do the same.

Final Thoughts

We often think of loving someone as a two way street. I’m not sure that’s the case. Perhaps loving for the sake of loving is enough.

We often think of the education between parent and child as a one way street. I’m not sure that’s the case. Perhaps the parents job is not to teach the child, but to learn from them.

Regardless, it’s Father’s Day - and Dr. Jeff Spencer has provided an example of how being a father has taught him lessons to enrich his life and the lives of others.

Oh, and his daughter?

She is now a full grown, gem of a human. She’s also a mother, which means that not only did she got to learn from her dad, now she gets to learn from her daughter - just like he did.

The Success Finder Association1 is largely inspired by Nic Petersons book, Bumpers2. Nic - who is a partner in the association - has a way of flipping the way people think on its head to reveal what’s often hidden in plain sight. But thinking differently is not enough, we have to do differently.

Below is a breakdown of how a Chiropractor in Kalispell, Montana added $109,200 a year in profit through Nic’s “Recapture and Reallocate”3 process. The basic strategies used to add $109,200 to the bottom line are available to every business owner.

The Business

Topline Revenue: $1,2500,000
Profit Margins: 25%

The Process

Nic has a simple set of rules:

1. Don’t do new things that violate your own economic and personal principles. If it gets you further away from what you want, don’t do it. In other words, do less stupid stuff.

2. Do less of the stuff you’re already doing that violates your economic and personal principles. Staying in stupid stuff is the same as making a new stupid decision every day.

In other words, don’t push harder on the gas while you still have a foot on the brake(s). Most chiropractors we talk to are violating their economic principles multiple times a day - and are completely unaware of it.

Here’s a quick test.

If you had a choice between spending an hour on the phone to close a $2,500 sale or spending that hour doing some mundane task(s) to save $900 instead - what would you do with your hour?

Now think about it this way:

A $2,500 sale at a 25% profit margin adds $625 to the bottom line while increasing

• Risk

• Obligation

• Overhead/costs to fulfill

Saving $900 adds $900 to the bottom line while likely reducing:

• Risk

• Obligation

• Overhead/cost

Given the choice between more cash with less risk and less cash with more risk, most business owners choose the latter - they’re violating their own economic principles because of the way it’s presented.

The following process took 45 minutes and added $109,200 to the bottom line - The Equivalent of $436,800 in New Sales

Phase 1: Basic Recapture

The first step is to recapture what is being wasted and plug the leaky bucket stuff. It’s super simple. Recapturing small expenses is just the first step.  There are often monthly, quarterly, and yearly recurring expenses that business owners don’t notice; redundant software, overpaying for enterprise accounts, free trials that were never canceled, etc.

There are also habitual expenditures that are triggered by recurring events, bloated expenses that can be trimmed, and “Opt-Out” costs that can be turned into “Opt-In” costs.

Basic Recapture Steps:

1. Eliminate. Using your bank statements or something like QuickBooks pull a year of statements and ruthlessly eliminate all recurring expenses that are not essential to your practice. Go back a full year, otherwise those pesky annual payments will slip through the cracks.

Remember, you can always opt back into any of those expenses if you end up needing (or just missing) them. The important thing is that you’re now in a position to “opt-in” instead of having to “opt out”, meaning you’re less likely to violate your principles.

2. Add. Add up all the expenses you’ve eliminated and annualize them. This is an important step, you’ll see why. For example: $109,200 a year.

3. Divide. Divide your total recapture number by your profit margin. For example: $109,200 / 25% = $436,800

4. Make A Statement. Fill in the blanks and then write it down or say it out loud:

“I just recaptured $_(total from step 2)__ a year which is the equivalent of $__(total from step 3)__ in new sales.”

Phase 2: Advanced Recapture

The basic recapture steps apply to every business owner on the planet. Advanced recapture is slightly more complex because it depends on many factors including the state of incorporation, current tax strategies being deployed, and personal situation(s).

Advanced recapture opportunities are often the things we set up once. a long time ago, and never thought twice about it because it’s “just the way it’s always been.” They are also the most likely to creep up, become a problem, and knock you out of the game.

While they are less cookie-cutter and require more personalization, the advanced recapture steps can decrease risk and increase profit exponentially for practice owners.

Advanced Recapture Steps

1. Audit Your Health Insurance. Nearly everyone making over $100,000 a year that we’ve talked to is overpaying for health insurance - sometimes by $300-$600 a month! More importantly, they are also undercovered - and have no idea. Don’t forget your employee’s insurance and workers comp if you offer it. Note: most of the best health insurance options are hard to find and are only available to members of an association. Don’t worry, we have a solution for you in the resources.

2. Advanced Tax Strategies. There are tax advantages available to but rarely used by Chiropractors. The most common tax advantages and strategies for our Chiropractor friends are listed below. We’re not CPAs so ask yours about the ones that apply to you.

   1. The Augusta Loophole (Average of $14,000 a year recaptured)*

   2. Equipment Depreciation (Average of $102,440 a year recaptured)*

   3. R&D Credits (average of $17,000 a year recaptured)*

   4. Pay children tax-free. (Average of $12,000 per child allowed)*

*The data above is self-reported by practice owners and confirmed, with their permission, by their CPA or tax professional. We did not include any tax strategies in our calculations in the article since we can’t help you with tax planning.

That’s it.

It’s so simple and obvious it’s almost boring because once again…

SUCCESS STRATEGY

The job is not to save everyone. It's to save everyone willing to be saved.

You can't save the unsavable, you can't close the un-closable. The earlier you recognize who is not willing to be saved, the sooner you can make the right decision. There are a few practical implications, off the top of my head. As a hostage negotiator, the proper way to measure your success rate is not what percent of people were saved, but instead what percent of savable people were saved. If you were to count the “unsavable”, the data would be faulty, thus, so would the feedback loop. It’s a version of brain sludge and being aware of the negative impacts of outcome bias

To become better at your job, you would first need to be able to identify who is not willing to be saved. Then, refine that skill to identify it sooner and sooner. Now think about relationships, sales, or partnerships - and apply the same framework. If you can quickly identify who was never going to be a good fit, you get the time back - and time is money. You’ll also have more accurate feedback loops, there is no sense in changing a process because it didn’t work on someone that no process would work on.

The Substack Strategy

Should you start a substack? It depends.

Substack is a combination of an email list, blog, and community platform with chat features, and gating and is super simple to use. It’s also missing some of the most commonly used marketing tools like list segmentation and automation.

So, does it make sense? For us and many others, it does. Our Substack strategy is modeled after and integrated with the Man Bites Dog Substack strategy.

The demand for AI in the office is likely not going anywhere anytime soon. Between 2012 and 2023, AI job openings grew 3.5x faster than openings for all jobs. Plus, industries in which AI is more commonly used — financial services, IT, and professional services — have 4.8x the labor productivity growth, something PwC says can be a boon for economic growth

We’re not heavily focused on AI, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be - especially if you’re looking for a job shortly.

SUCCESS PHILOSOPHY

Are you looking out a window… or into a mirror?

Imagine that you know exactly where you want to go. You pull up Google Maps on your phone and enter your desired destination. The app is unable to determine your current location and you're not sure where you are, so you can't enter it. Without an accurate starting location, Google Maps can't help you. 

Even the most advanced navigation tools are useless without an accurate starting location. It's the  “you are here” sticker on the map. Until you can see where you are, you cannot get to where you want to go. 

We must learn to look at ourselves as we would look at others. Imagine looking out a window and seeing everything that you love  "out there". Now imagine looking out the same window and seeing everything that you hate "out there".  This is the perspective of an Entitled traveler; always looking out the window to see the world.  The Earned traveler understands that what seems to be a window is actually a mirror. What we love or hate in others, we actually love or hate about ourselves. 

The problems "out there" [the window] are actually problems "in here" [the mirror].

Seeing yourself is like locating the "you are here sticker" on a map.  If you do not learn to see yourself, nothing else will work.

Once you can see your true self, you can Guard Your True Self.

SUCCESS STRATEGY

Better than your best is…stupid. 

Nothing happens in a straight line. The rolling average tells us the story that we care about. There are no straight lines in nature. 

Expecting them is nonsensical and forcing them can be disastrous. I believe that the most practical way to measure progress in the real world is the rolling average. Complex and adaptive systems tend to be cyclic, they ebb and flow. They have peaks and valleys; ceilings and floors.

The goal is not to force a straight line by removing the cycles. It's to reduce the volatility and increase the reliability of the system. Volatility is the average distance between the ceiling and the floor. The lower the discrepancy between the two, the more volatile the system and the more control we have over the outcome.

We cannot eliminate the floor. Some days will always be a little worse than others. But we can raise it. If the ceiling stays the same, but the floor rises, the rolling average improves.

Raising the floor is also efficient. Most people strive for higher highs, which is the least efficient way to make progress. By definition, your best is the best you can do. Could you maybe do better tomorrow? Sure, but the lifetime of data suggests that it will be difficult, otherwise it wouldn't be your best. Pushing yourself to do better than your best often leads to exhaustion and burnout. It's during these times of burnout we spend time on the "floor" and lower our rolling average.

It’s not always obvious, but the key to sustainable success is in Raising The Floor.

SUCCESS STRATEGY

Two secret trigger words to get people to say “Yes”

Because. According to Robert Cialdini, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, “A well-known principle of human behavior says that when we ask someone to do us a favor we will be more successful if we provide a reason. People simply like to have reasons for what they do.”

When you make a request just add a “because” in the sentence. We’re huge fans of Cialdini and his work.

Getting a “No” from someone dramatically increases the probability of them being honest with you. There is nobody better to learn “No Oriented” questions from than our friend Chris Voss.

SUCCESS TACTIC
